Diagnosis

What it usually turns out to be

In the order it gets worked through on site — cheapest and most likely first, the sealed system last, because that is the honest order rather than the profitable one.

  1. Water in

    No ice at all usually starts at the supply: a strainer choked with grit, a valve that no longer opens reliably, a filter years past its life, or tubing that has gone brittle behind the cabinet. All of it is visible once the grille is off.

  2. The freeze cycle itself

    Hollow, undersized or cloudy cubes point at the cycle rather than the plumbing — a short harvest, scale on the freezing plate, or a module that is no longer holding the plate cold enough for clear ice to form.

  3. Bin, sensor and drain

    An empty bin with the unit calling for ice is often the bin-level sensor reading full. Cubes welding into one lump, or water pooling under the cabinet, is the drain or a split hose — and that one gets worse while you wait.

Three things worth checking

None of this is a repair. It is the difference between a first visit that starts with questions and one that starts with a meter in the right place.

  • Check how long ago the water filter was changed, and say so on the phone.
  • Look for water on the floor of the cabinet below. A dripping drain hose is an easy fix and an expensive wait.
  • Note whether the unit is silent or cycling. Silent and cycling are two different diagnoses.

Which end of a band a cabinet lands on depends on the part and on how much has to come apart to reach it. You hear one firm number for the whole job, agreed with you before anything is opened up or ordered, and the $89 service call comes off that number once you approve the work.
