How Is a Custom Panel Attached to the Door?

Where it sits

Between two things made in different workshops. The appliance door leaves the factory ready to take a face; the joiner builds that face to the dimensions the model calls for. The hardware in between is fitted to the door and engages the back of the woodwork, and from the room you see none of it, which is the entire point of a panel-ready cabinet.

How it fails

Seldom all at once. What normally happens is that one fixing slackens off, or was never drawn up as firmly as the rest, and the face starts to move on the door instead of with it.

The edges report it. The gap along one side opens at the top and closes at the bottom, a corner stands slightly proud of its neighbour, or the door sounds hollow on closing because the woodwork arrives a fraction after the door does.

Remodelling is the other cause, and around Los Angeles it is the frequent one. Refacing a kitchen means the fronts come off and go back — sometimes into holes that have been drilled again, sometimes under a face heavier than the one that was there. Fixings set once and disturbed twice do not always land where they started.

What replacing it involves

Looking before touching. A visit works out whether the face has moved on the door or the door has moved in its opening, because from three paces those two look identical and have nothing else in common.

Where the fixings are the fault they are refitted, and the face is squared to the carcase rather than to whatever sits beside it. Where a fixing point in the timber has torn or been opened out, that half of the job belongs to a joiner and the report will say so. Anything on the appliance side is put right with genuine hardware, and the door is checked shut before the visit ends.
